Origins & History
Gulets originated in the boatyards of Bodrum and Bozburun on Turkey's Aegean coast. Originally built as fishing and cargo vessels, they were adopted in the 1970s and 80s for leisure cruising — a movement that became known as the 'Blue Cruise' (Mavi Yolculuk). Today, master boatbuilders continue to construct gulets using traditional methods, hand-shaping mahogany and teak into vessels of extraordinary beauty.
Design & Construction
A classic gulet features a broad beam, a rounded stern, and two or three masts carrying lateen or Bermuda-rigged sails. The hull is typically built from Turkish pine, while the superstructure and decking use mahogany, iroko, and teak. Modern luxury gulets range from 20 to 50+ metres, with spacious en-suite cabins, air conditioning, generators, and full galley kitchens below deck.
